CAN FORENSIC EVIDENCE BE TAMPERED WITH OR MANIPULATED?

It is possible that the forensic evidence can be tampered with or manipulated. Evidence is usually transferred between various laboratories or departments that are at different geographical locations, therefore presenting opportunities to damage or alter the evidence. This is why preserving the chain of custody (CoC) is crucial as it provides a log of whoever has handled the evidence.  Further, the examination of packaging and examination of its condition can reveal information of tampering to determine its acceptability for further processing.
